Lead Safe - A property built before 1979
has had the following:
1. Replacement windows installed, or windows that
are found to be "lead safe".
2. Meets all of the Risk Reduction Standards
specified by the Virginia Department of the environment
(for rental units built before 1950).
3. Passed a lead dust test by a certified
inspector before occupancy.
Lead Free - Any unit built after
1978 is presumed free of lead based paint. Any unit
built prior to 1978 must have been tested by an
accredited inspector with an XRF machine and proven free
of lead based paint. The property owner should be able
to provide the tenant with a copy of the lead free
certificate.
